A Matter Of Character

Zondervan (May 25, 2010)

by

Robin Lee Hatcher

MY THOUGHTS:
This is a fun historical romance novel -- the third in the Sisters of Bethlehem Series. I did not read the first two books in the series, but that didn't cause me any confusion while reading this book. However, I'm intrigued by the characters who were obviously the main players in those books and I want to go back and read A Vote of Confidence and Fit To Be Tied.

Robin has created this series about women in roles that are rather unconventional for their time, which is half the fun! The characters are strong in their abilities to use their God-given gifts and talents as He sees fits, despite what others say is 'proper', yet they still find ways to be endearing to those around them. The whole concept leads to quite a bit of controversy.

A Matter of Character will cause you to stop and think about stereotypes and perceptions of others based on certain pieces of information. Perhaps you believe you know someone well, but without understanding his or her whole life, you may be judgmental in ways that are incredibly shortsighted.

This is a fun read for a summers' day.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Robin Lee Hatcher discovered her vocation as a novelist after many years of reading everything she could put her hands on, including the backs of cereal boxes and ketchup bottles. The winner of the Christy Award for Excellence in Christian Fiction (Whispers from Yesterday), the RITA Award for Best Inspirational Romance (Patterns of Love and The Shepherd's Voice), two RT Career Achievement Awards (Americana Romance and Inspirational Fiction), and the RWA Lifetime Achievement Award, Robin is the author of over 50 novels, including Catching Katie, named one of the Best Books of 2004 by the Library Journal.

Robin enjoys being with her family, spending time in the beautiful Idaho outdoors, reading books that make her cry, and watching romantic movies. She is passionate about the theater, and several nights every summer, she can be found at the outdoor amphitheater of the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, enjoying Shakespeare under the stars. She makes her home outside of Boise, sharing it with Poppet the high-maintenance Papillon

ABOUT THE BOOK

It's 1918, and Daphne McKinley, heiress to a small fortune, has found contentment in the town of Bethlehem Springs, Idaho. But Daphne has a secret.

A series of dime novels loosely based on local lore and featuring a nefarious villain known as Rawhide Rick has enjoyed modest popularity among readers. Nobody in Bethlehem Springs knows the man behind the stories ... except Daphne.

When newspaperman Joshua Crawford comes to town searching for the man who sullied the good name of his grandfather, Daphne finds herself at a crossroads, reassessing the power of her words, re-thinking how best to honor her gifts, and reconsidering what she wants out of life.

Robin is conducting a contest for the new book. Join in the fun HERE.

Almost Forever

Almost Forever
by
Deborah Raney

MY THOUGHTS

Have you ever known a truth so horrible that you blocked it out of your mind? Deborah Raney's new book pulls you into a tragic story immediately as a homeless shelter burns to the ground, taking with it the lives of five courageous firefighters. The volunteer in charge that night, Bryn, has suspicions about the cause of the fire, but just can't remember the truth as she mourns for her husband, one of the firefighters killed in the blaze.

This book is a story of anger, mourning, and learning to live again after a senseless tragedy. It leads you through different responses people take in a tragedy, and individual means of healing -- with or without God. And, ultimately, it is about learning how true obedience will allow the truth to set you free.

While this book won't have you on the edge of your seat, it is a thoughtful book about how our humanness allows us to jump to conclusions about people from different walks of life and about the motivations of others. I enjoyed the story and the thought provoking content.

ABOUT THE BOOK

A firefighter's wife, Bryn thinks she knows more than most just how dangerous fire can be. Yet when it takes the life of her husband and four other firefighters, Bryn sees fire for the thief it truly is.

From their mutual despair, Bryn and another firefighter's surviving spouse form a close friendship. As the relationship begins to blossom into more, though, the thief comes again and Bryn must face the question: what caused the fire that stole her ?

With her classic style, she's created three dimensional characters that the reader can relate to and empathize with. And just watch what you post on the internet...

ABOUT THE BOOK

The murder of Krista Carmichael's fourteen-year-old sister by an online predator has shaken her faith and made her question God's justice and protection. Desperate to find the killer, she creates an online persona to bait the predator. But when the stalker turns his sights on her, will Krista be able to control the outcome?

Ryan Adkins started the social network GrapeVyne in his college dorm and has grown it into a billion-dollar corporation. But he never expected it to become a stalking ground for online Predators. One of them lives in his town and has killed two girls and attacked a third. When Ryan meets Krista, the murders become more than a news story to him, and everything is on the line.

Joining forces, he and Krista set out to stop the killer. But when hunters pursue a hunter, the tables can easily turn. Only God can protect them now.

Chosen

Chosen
by
Ginger Garrett

MY THOUGHTS:
Ginger Garrett recreates the story of Esther through an amazing archeological find -- Esther's diary. From a young Jewish girls' perspective we are able to step into an amazing time in history to see the inner workings of a place seldom seen by those in the Jewish world. We learn of Esther's life with her cousin Mordecai, how she is selected to move into the palace harem, and the intense preparations made before she could be presented to the king.

With her unique perspective as a historian of the life of ancient women, Ginger has written a fascinating book that transports the reader to another place and time. While it is difficult to understand some of the customs and philosophies of the era, this book provides insight for us as Esther also learns of a foreign culture. Woven throughout are threads of strength, determination, love lost, friendship, and learning to discover what one is really made of.

This is a wonderful book for those who like history, historical fiction, and those who like to learn about other cultures.

You can buy copies of this book at Amazon.com and DavidcCook.com

ABOUT THE BOOK:
The guard stepped into the room I was in and held out his hand. Seeing him in my bedroom, his armor and sword reflecting the breakfast sun, was a nightmare I could not shake myself from. I was led past Mordecai to the entrance of our home, where several men stood with scrolls. The commissioner rode on a horse and judged me from his perch. A knowing glance passed between him and the guard, and then the men began to write.”

“I had been chosen.”

Chosen is the first release in beloved author Ginger Garrett’s new Lost Loves of the Bible trilogy. Chosen tells the story of Queen Esther, the young woman with the future of her nation in her hands. Wrenched from a simple life for her beauty, Esther finds herself at the mercy of King Xerxes. Leaving behind her only relative, her cousin Mordecai, and her first true love, Cyrus, she is thrown headlong into the unrestrained extravagance of palace living. Quick of mind and strong in spirit, she refuses to suffer the fate of her harem sisters and boldly challenges Xerxes to give of his heart before taking his pleasure, thus sealing her place beside him as queen. While conspiracy spins its diabolical web, Esther’s mind and spirit waver, and she is forced to confront the past in order to save her future—and that of an entire nation.

Based on the historical account of Queen Esther of Persia, Chosen, by Ginger Garrett, is a contemporary account of this beloved and ancient story. Uniquely written in first-person diary format, renderings of Esther’s thoughts and experiences are interspersed with current-time news excerpts, which show how Esther’s tale is woven into our own lives.

A fresh examination of one of Scripture’s most inspiring personalities, Chosen has been described by bestselling authors Brock and Bodie Thoene as “A story that is sure to be a classic! Exciting, dramatic, and filled with truth. A great read from the first page!”

Chosen is being released as part of Garrett’s series based on the great loves of the Bible:

  • Esther, who loved a king who refused to give his whole heart to her
  • Jezebel, who loved Ahab but destroyed him in pursuit of her own dynasty
  • Delilah, who loved Samson but sentenced him to die because of her fear
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Focusing on ancient women's history, Ginger Garrett creates novels and nonfiction resources that explore the lives of historical women, including her most recent books in the Chronicles of the Scribe series. In addition to her writing, she is a frequent radio and television guest. Ginger resides in Georgia with her husband and three children. Check out her website here.
