Davis Bunn & Janette Oke
Bunn and Oke bring the time period of Acts alive. By giving faces and personalities to the various characters in the Bible, they give us a chance to feel like we are really there, living side by side with new believers as they try to come to grips with life right after the resurrection. I was particularly fascinated with the characterizations of Ananais and Sapphira, the events leading up to and following their donation to the church, and the varied reactions by the believers, Jews, and Romans.
This book is the second book in the Acts of Faith series; the first was The Centurion's Wife. You can read this book without reading the first, but you will have a much better understanding of the people and places involved. I would highly recommend this book as a way to bring the early church times to life. You can buy a copy of the book here.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
In first-century Judea, the followers of the Way have burgeoned into a vibrant, growing community that cannot be ignored. Jerusalem is in turmoil as its religious leaders on one side, and their Roman rulers on the other, conspire to stamp out the fledgling Church. And Abigail, who thought she had finally found home and safety, is caught between the opposing forces.
Two suitors desire the lovely Abigail's hand in marriage. Ezra, a successful Hebrew merchant and widower with important connections among the Sanhedrin, is looking for a mother for his children. The Roman soldier Linux is fascinated by her winsome charm and possibly could offer the sanctuary -- maybe even the love -- for which she yearns. But her heart has been captured by neighbor of these. Will her faith and courage survive a heartbreak beyond comprehension as the followers face a gathering storm of persecution they never could have foreseen?

Susan May Warren
Susan May Warren is one of those authors that I turn to whenever I want to get away from the world. She creates characters and scenarios that draw you in so completely that dogs can bark, kids can fight, and stomachs can growl to no avail -- I'm not deterred! Double Trouble pulled me from my petty failures into PJ Sugar's megacrises instantly! Yes, the dog had tracked mud on my newly mopped floor, but she was running from a potential murderer with nothing but a Bismark donut as a weapon, only to have her boss stop the perpetrators escape with her vintage VW bug. As her only means of transportation sits crumpled in the parking lot she realizes that she just might have over reacted. Thus begins her career as a private investigator. PJ Sugar represents every woman who tries hard to succeed at all she does, but seems only to end up over extended and not quite meeting the expectations of herself and others. She tries a little too hard and often ends up in hilarious situations and sometimes in dangerously hot water. Susan's writing style will have you cheering for her and wishing you could just hug her and tell her it will be ok. This is a thoroughly enjoyable book, and I can't wait to read the next in the series.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
With one solved case under her belt, PJ Sugar is ready to dive into her career as a private investigator. Or at least a PI's assistant until she can prove herself to Jeremy Kane, her new boss. Suddenly PJ's seeing crime everywhere. But is it just in her head, or can she trust her instincts? When she takes on her first official case-house-sitting for a witness in protective custody-Jeremy assures her there's no danger involved. But it soon becomes clear that there is someone after the witness . . . and now they're after PJ, too.

Every family has secrets. Few will go as far as the Baxters to keep them. Bestselling novelist CJ Baxter has made a career out of writing hard-hitting stories ripped from his own life. Still there's one story from his past he's never told. One secret that's remained buried for decades. Now, seventeen years after swearing he'd never return, CJ is headed back to Adelia, NY. His life in Tennessee has fallen to pieces, his grandfather is dying, and CJ can no longer run from the past. With Graham Baxter, CJ's brother, running for Senate, a black sheep digging up old family secrets is the last thing the family and campaign can afford. CJ soon discovers that blood may be thicker than water, but it's no match for power and money. There are wounds even time cannot heal.

This is a great book for those who love suspense but don't have a lot of time to read. The book draws you in immediately and is difficult to put down, but is short enough to complete in a couple of hours so you don't have to ignore your family completely! It has the perfect balance of characters -- the handsome rich young playboy, the reporter intent on searching out the truth, the innocent and hardworking heroine, the standoffish gardener, and the rude policeman. There are plenty of opportunities for romance, humor, and false leads that keep you guessing right up to the end! Deanne and J. Mark make a great team. I hope the work together on more books.
