Day 28: Exodus 33:1 –
35:29
I
can hardly imagine the amazing relationship Moses had with God. And to be
Joshua, who was a regular witness to the discussions they had! In the tent of
meeting, it says God talked to Moses “face to face, as a man speaks with his
friend”. And all the people stood and worshipped while the discussions were
going on!
It
was a bit confusing to me that the above text came before Moses asked to see
the glory of God and God replied that no one could see his face and live. How
do you reconcile these two verses?
Moses
might have been hesitant to talk to Pharaoh, but goodness he was brave in front
of God! I love to see the way he argued with God to ensure God went along with
them on their journey, and he was pretty gutsy to ask God to show his glory!
These
verses show us that it’s ok to talk with God as a friend, and even to ask for
big things. Of course God gets the final say in what he grants, but he seems to
enjoy this type of relationship. What is the biggest thing you have ever asked
of God? Have you argued or disagreed with him directly? What verses give you
courage to confront him?
I
giggled a little when, after he stated big lofty rules, God says not to cook a
young goat in its mother’s milk. I have to wonder how that fits in with
important guidance on the Sabbath, celebrations, and sacrifices. Surely that
was a bigger deal in the context of that culture than I can comprehend.
