January 27: Exodus 30 –
32
God
concludes his conversation with Moses by discussing items that represent
holiness – incense, cleanliness, anointing oil, and Sabbath observation. And at
the same time the Israelites are discouraged that Moses hasn’t returned so they
seek an idol to lead them forward. Oh, how quickly we fall. Sure, it’s easy to
judge them for their lack of faith, but don’t we do the same thing?
How
easy is it to feel anxious, depressed, or simply hopeless when you watch the
news or read of yet another senseless killing? Everywhere we turn there are
robberies, political scandals, and controversial medical or educational
mandates. Some days it makes me want to bury my head in my pillow and not get
out of bed. It’s easy to forget that God is in control and he knows intimately
everything that is going on in our world – globally, locally, and in our own
homes. He knows the issues you have with family members who go astray, with
illness, with finances, with job stress, and with daily frustrations. Yet he’s
promised not to leave or forsake us. Amen for that!
One
section of today’s reading is especially encouraging to me. Did you notice that
God gave Bezalel, Oholiab, and the other craftsmen the “skill, ability, and
knowledge in all kinds of crafts” necessary to build the tabernacle? If God can
do that, he will surely give us the skills, abilities, and knowledge necessary
to do what he calls us to!
