January 23: Exodus 18:1
– 21:21
We
are starting on a journey with some pretty interesting and often harsh rules
God hands down to Moses. Over the next few days we’ll discuss some of them, but
I don’t want to miss the lesson in the first section of our reading today.
Jethro
sees what Moses is doing and offers some constructive criticism and advice.
Moses listens and acts upon it, realizing he is taking too much on his
shoulders. How often do we do the same – taking on responsibilities that are
too much for us AND taking away the chance for others to learn and grow? What
are you doing in your home, your church, or your community that has become a
prideful activity – one that you don’t think anyone else can do as well? How
can you teach someone else to do it or even allow them to do it their own way?
The
second major element of reading today is the ten commandments. Oh how far we’ve
fallen from the level of respect and obedience these deserve! We should each
read these carefully and examine our own behavior. True, we are not under the
law in the sense the Israelites were, but these commandments are given that our
lives will be more meaningful and effective. I bet if we are honest we have
broken most of these at least in our minds and attitudes. Thankfully Jesus
covers our sins, but we are expected to confess and repent. I know I need to
spend some time on my knees after reading today’s text.
